“Over the past few decades, we’ve been ‘action filmed-out’ and ‘monster filmed-out’ and almost ‘science fiction filmed-out’. So the baseline question is: how original are you going to be?” So said Ridley Scott in a recent promotional interview for his new film Prometheus. Despite my love for a large proportion of Scott’s work, I have to disagree. Yes, it’s a deeper and deeper dig to discover genre originality, and there is a multitude of detritus out there to trap the undiscerning, but the gems can still be unearthed. Now, more than ever before, we need trusted gate-keepers – much like Scott himself – to ensure that only the best gets admitted into the sci-fi pantheon. Here’s hoping that the spine tingling thrills I experienced while watching Happy Birthday David return while watching the finished article.
